Qualitative Content Analysis Workshop

Qualitative Content Analysis Workshop

£30.00

Description

In this workshop, we will explore how classical content analysis (CA) bridges the worlds of qualitative and quantitative research as a method of text analysis. The key feature of classical CA is that we are working with a closed coding frame, once the pilot work is completed.

We will explore the history of CA, as well as the design of PhD projects using CA, including discussion of sampling, corpus construction, units of analysis, developing and applying a coding frame and the virtue of manual coding. We will also explore questions of objectivity-intersubjectivity, reliability, validity, generalizability, replicability and the use of CA to test hypotheses, as issues fundamental to the thinking about the rigorous application of CA in PhD projects.

Designing Mixed Method Evaluation Research workshop

Designing Mixed Method Evaluation Research workshop

£30.00

Description

Mixed method designs (using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods) are increasingly used and documented in applied fields, in situations where researchers seek to assess and understand the effects of policies or interventions. In this session, we will distinguish the main rationales for combining methods, and their associated designs. We will explore strengths, weaknesses, challenges and effective methodological practices for a variety of mixed method research designs. Important principles of complementarity, confirmation, sequencing and nesting will be laid out and examined. Examples from the fields of housing policy, public health and drug policy will be used, as well as examples from students own work.
